Question by iluvbirds25: If American Express Wants to Lower the Credit Limit on People Who Shop At Lower End Stores, Why does Costco?
limit their acceptance to American Express Credit Cards?
A few months ago, American Express announced that they were checking customer records and decreasing the line of credit they offered to people who did not show a record of shopping at the more expensive stores. Basically, they wanted to penalize smart shoppers. Why does Costco only accept credit cards by American Express? It bothers me that Costco would work with a company that treated consumers in this fashion.
I first heard about this on ABC News.
http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/GetsAnswers/Story?id=6747461&page=2
The only credit card that Costco allows is American Express.

Amex must have great salespeople with great relationships with Costco. Or they may have sweetened the deal so much with Costco (lower merchant account fees for every credit card payments done through Amex)
I’m one of those whose credit limits have been significantly reduced. Good thing I’ve got 0 balance, so I simply do not intend to use the card again. Too bad for Costco because that means I would significantly cut off my shopping with them as wel

Question by Kitana K: Being sued by credit card company?
I originally got a capital one credit card in Oct. 2006, and ended up being laid off the next month. I owed capital one about $ 700 and I received a court summons yesterday, the same day as I moved out of state to find better work. I can’t pay anything right now (at my last job, I only made $ 150 every two weeks) and don’t have anything in my bank accounts. What should my next move be?

Call the creditor and tell them your situation. They will work out a payment plan based on your income. If they won’t then tell them to screw off.

Question by Tom C: Anyone receive new credit card statement from Chase?
Received my monthly Credit Card statement from Chase. The minimum due increased 150%. It went from $ 105 per month to $ 259 per month. Is this legal? What did Obama and the Credit Card Companies agree to when they met? This can’t be good for the economy. Instead of spending $ 150 per month I will be giving it to the Companies that created this mess because they say I have to and they changed thier terms after the fact.
Just as a note related to the first answer is the interest rate isn’t high it is only 4-6% for the life of the loans. Secondly how many people can afford a $ 250 increase in payments per month per credit card?

Answer by David M
The companies who created this mess? What created this mess was people borrowing more than they could afford to pay back. They are actually doing you a favor forcing you to pay back this expensive debt sooner. Cut your spending, pay this high interest debt down quicker and you will be much better off fo it. Good luck.

Question by Sweet: If i cancel a student credit card will it hurt my credit?
I have a student credit card from Chase. I’m not really sure if i want a credit card or not because i’ll be tempted to spend more money. But i like the idea of building my credit. I know that canceling a regular credit card with hurt your credit. Will a student credit hurt it too?
Also is having a credit card the best way to earn credit? I’m scared of identity theft. lol

Answer by bdancer222
If you don’t have any balances on any credit cards, cancelling the card won’t hurt your credit that much. Of course, if this is the only thing on your credit, you will be completely eliminating your history.
If you really want to build your credit. Use the card for a small purchase every month and pay the balance in full when the statement comes. That way you will build a good payment history, avoid paying interest, and stay out of debt. Having the card and not using it at all will not build your credit.
Part of good financial management is learning to discipline your spending. Credit cards can be very useful tools if you learn how to use them right.

Question by Shelly: What should we pay off first?
Okay, we’re going to have about 10K coming in March to pay off debt….where do we start?
I was thinking about paying off the credit cards with the highest interest rates off first….is that the way to go?
Or should we pay off the negative equity on our car which is 10k, and get rid of it or refinance it…..we cannot get it refinanced because of the -equity. We are due to pay $ 470 per month for 6 yrs on a car that is worth 11K!
We have a lot of credit debt, like right off the bat a 17% interest rate on a maxed out 5k water system. & there’s a 2K Dell account, a 1K capital one, 1K Fingerhut, 2.5K Sears.
But we just bought our first home in August, its the same in mortgage as we were spending on rent…so its good! BUT there are some major repairs needed….we need a fence in the front for safety for our kids, 1K in plumbing, $ 600 water heater, 6 cracked windows, bathroom floor needs replacing…thats about it, OH and the electrical system needs to be updated but that can wait…….
Dh was thinking we should try to get rid of our car with 5K because a dealership recently offered to swallow 5k in -equity if we came up with the other 5K….but we didnt have it. IF we keep the car as it is with a 13% rate, we’ll end up paying over 30K for it in the long run and we only make 30K per year.
Please help, we dont know where to put our money, we dont want to put it in the wrong place.

Answer by Jeremy K
Pay off/down your credit cards first! This will have a dramatic effect on your credit score, which will give you more options in dealing with the car later on. No matter WHAT the dealer offers you, it is in THEIR best interest… don’t go from being upside down in one vehicle to the next one. Get your score up, interest rates will drop on cards and car loans, and in time things will start to fall in place. Speaking from personal experience!

Question by xxjavicbr600xx: Have a secured card by bank of america, don’t understand?
I got a secured card from bank of america. When i asked they told me they would report it as a regular credit card not a secured one. When I look on my credit it says “secured line of credit”. I am about to call and complain. My question is, will it still help my credit even though it states “secured line of credit”. The thing is its also a partially secured card, because I only had to give $ 99 and they gave me a limit of $ 500. So my question still stands, will it help my credit if it says secured? or should I call and try to hold them to thier word? thanks

Answer by PSO
I’m not entirely sure. I would call them and have them clarify. As far as I know, a secure credit card is basically like a debit card and will not help a credit score. I could be wrong though. Good luck.

Question by Foxii Roxii Valentine Iwant Unow Ski iwantawhisky: Can I Sell Online with an American Express Gift Card?
Yeah I am going to start selling stuff on Etsy.com and was wondering if I could sell stuff on there and just have the money transfered to an American Express Gift Card, cause I am a minor and don’t have a credit card. HELP?! It would be really awesome if I could so I could make some money!
Best answer:
Answer by spitfire1958
Well…I sell on Etsy.com and use my debit card to pay fees. You just need a bank account and get the free debit card. I think the American Express Gift Card has to be purchased. Your payments from sales comes to you through Paypal, so you’d have to set up an account there using your debit card. Note that Paypal will charge you a fee for receiving each payment and I think a payment when you request a check.

Question by dancinglace432: Please read short story excerpt:)?
I’m looking for feedback and possibly a title
My phone vibrates, and I answer it. It’s Henry.
“ Where are you?” he asks.
“I don’t know” I say.
“Are you okay?”
“I’m fine. I just need some time.”
“ I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to.” I know he’s telling the truth. I know he didn’t mean to do it. I know he never did. He never meant to do it. He never means to do it.
“I know you didn’t mean to do it.”
“Please, I hate myself. I really do, I just need you.” His voice cracks. “God, I don’t want to hurt you.”
“I can’t come home yet.” I hear myself say.
“Can I at least see you?” It’s brighter outside, the quirky yellow clock on the wall reads 9:03. I tell him to call me tomorrow and hang up. I still don’t know where to go. I don’t have anywhere to go. Both my parents are dead. I don’t have any friends. I haven’t talked to my sister in over a year. I use one of the computers at the cafe, paying the 50 cents to use the internet. I look up hotels, if I use my credit card, his credit card, he’ll know where I am. I log off. I call my sister.
“Amy, it’s me.” I say.
“Paige?”
“Yes.” I say. “I’m sorry I haven’t called.”
“It’s okay sweetie. I know you’ve been having trouble since the miscarriage.” I wince. She is trying to be sympathetic.
“That’s kinda why I called. I need a place to stay, and…” Amy interrupts.
“Of course. I’d come get you, but I have to take Lucy to her ballet class. I’ll have Nate come get you, where are you?” she asks. I look up at the sign.
“The Sunflower Cafe.” I say. It’s on 7342 Oak Street.
“Okay sweetie. Is everything okay with you and Henry?”
“Of course.” I lie, a reflex, before I realize that she’ll see the bruises. “I’ll tell you about it when I get there.” I finger the locket that hangs around my neck, the tiny picture frame hidden between my breasts. A tiny sonogram, I had the picture minimized to fit at a Kinkos. Henry had it made for me the day after we had the sonogram at the doctor’s office. I was four months pregnant, her name was Elizabeth. Beth.
“How was work, babe?” I asked him, kissing him on the back of the neck. He spun around.
“It was shitty, Paige. Really ******* shitty.” He hissed. “I didn’t make partner -again.”
“I’m sorry. You deserved it, I know how hard you worked.” I squeezed his hand, trying to soothe him.
“I know that, Paige. But it doesn’t matter.”
“I have a surprise for you, though.” I looked up at him, hoping seeing the baby crib in the nursery would cheer him up. That thinking about our baby would make him forget to be angry. I led him upstairs. Her nursery was yellow, lace curtains framed the windows, and pictures of fairies, ballerinas and animals hung from the walls. The crib was white wood, handmade in Paris. It was delicate and perfect. Just like our baby would be.
“How much was it?” he demanded.
“Well, it was made in Paris, and I wanted it to be perfect, so…” He grabbed my arm.
“How. Much. Was. It.”
“It was $ 2000 dollars.” I whispered
“God Damn it!” He screamed, smashing the crib, “From ******* Paris? How the **** d’you expect me to pay for this? $ 2000 and you didn’t even think to ask?” The white crib lay shattered in the nursery. “I didn’t even want this ******* baby!” He punched my stomach.
“Stop!” I shouted back, wrapping my arms around my abdomen. “You promised.” I whispered.
“It’s not even my ******* baby. I don’t want the slimy little bastard!” He shoved me, I fell down the stairs. When I stopped falling, I realized I was surrounded my blood, flowing freely. I felt a searing pain where Elizabeth had been. And then I knew. He was sobbing, crumpled on the floor beside me. ?“Jesus, Paige, what have I done?” I wanted to get up and leave him, right there, in that moment, in the pool of blood that had been our child. I wanted to hit him, to scream, to hurt him like he had hurt me, like he had hurt our baby, my baby.
But I couldn’t get up, so I let him wrap his arms around me, I let him hold me, whispering that he was sorry, that he hated himself. That he would get help. I let him carry me upstairs, ignoring the blood stain forming on the hardwood. I let him take off my blue dress and my black shoes. I let him place me in the bathtub, warm water washing away the blood. I let him run his fingers over all the bruises and cuts, the salt of his tears washing away his sin. And when he finished, I let him dry me off as I lay limp in his arms, and place me into bed, whispering his apologies. And I didn’t leave him.
“ Paige?” I hear my name, and this time it isn’t the wind. I turn around, expecting to see Amy’s husband.
“Henry.”
